Baghdatis Loses Another High Profile 5 - Setter

Another Grandslam and another early loss for Marcos Baghdatis. Marcos rose to stardum by beating a bunch of seeded guys en route to his first and only Grandslam final. At that time (2006), Marcos was believed to have finally blossomed to a great player. What a mistake that was. Marcos Baghdatis is now synonym with “cramp” and/or “choking.”
Baghdatis dominated Hewitt in the first two sets of their historic matchup last night, but once again he cramped and choked the match away in the end. Marcos did fight back from 1–5 down in the fourth set to win that 7–6, but he should’ve won the second set and therefore the match in 4 sets.
Baghdatis lost a similar match to Andre Agassi, and has the honor of the last person to lose to Andre in a competitive match. If you look back at Marcos’ career, he has engraved his name in tennis history, but for all the wrong reasons:
- The last person to lose to Andre Agassi
- The losing side in Midnight Madness (to Hewitt)
- Always the losing side against the top dogs
So, where does Baghdatis go from here? He say he enjoys playing tennis and he loves the way he is playing right now. But how can you be happy with your form when you just lost in the third round of the Australian Open? The fact that he has been involved in some controvery has not helped his cause either. Baghdatis needs to decide whether he is serious about his tennis career. Does he want to be the winner of a Grand Slam someday or is he happy just being in the finals and on the losing side all the time. With young guns coming up fast, Marcos will not have too much time to decide!
