Tokyo Open: Berdych Stuns Roddick, Del Potro Beats Gasquet

Juan Martin Del Potro’s got to be the hottest player on the planet these days, He won again today by beating Gasquet who was playing well himself. The final score was 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. But perhaps the surprise of the day was Berdych who finally won a big match to reach another final. Berdych has had a tough year and it looked as though his drought would continue when Roddick served for the match at 5-3, but Berdych broke and won the third set tie-breaker to stun Roddick and set up a match against Del Potro.

I would still take Juan Martin over Thomas tomorrow. Berdych is a very good player but I don’t think he can cause Del Potro much trouble if Juan plays like he has. It could go to three sets but Del Potro will win his 5th title in this past couple of months.

Del Potro Comes Of Age, Dominates Roddick

Take a look at this guy. He is the future of tennis. He is one of those guys who will challenge Nadal and Djokovic for the titles. When Del Potro decimated Mardy Fish last night, I thought it was a fluke. Fish has been struggling to win sets so the win wasn’t surprising for me. But tonight, Del Potro became a man. He beat Roddick in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 to win his third straight title. Roddick may not be the force he was once but he is no chump either. To return Roddick’s service so effectively got to be alarming to the big servers out there. This guy is for real and if you rely on your serve to beat him, you’ll end up paying. Del Potro still needs to prove himself against the Murrays and Djokovics of this world, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in the top 15 soon.
